"Stereotype" (Hangul: 색안경, also stylized in all caps) is a song by STAYC. It is the first song and title track of the group's first mini album of the same name. It was released on September 6, 2021.

Background and release

On August 4, 2021, High Up Entertainment confirmed to Newsen that STAYC was planning a comeback. On August 16, it was reported that STAYC would release their first extended play, Stereotype, on September 6. On August 30, a highlight medley teaser video was released, revealing "Stereotype" as the lead single. On August 31, song producer Black Eyed Pilseung said in an interview that "Stereotype" was written and composed before to STAYC's debut, but was not picked as their debut song owing to the lyrics and message the song conveys. On September 2, a teaser video including some of the song's choreography was released. On September 4, a 30-second section of the song was pre-released.

Composition

"Stereotype" was written and composed by Black Eyed Pilseung and Jeon Goon, with arrangements by Rado. NME describes the song's musical style as "future bass with flute-like synths". "Stereotype" was written in the key of F-sharp major, at a pace of 148 beats per minute.

Commercial performance

"Stereotype" debuted at number 27 on South Korea's Gaon Digital Chart in the issue dated September 5-11, 2021. The song also debuted at positions 3, 37, and 93 on the Gaon Download Chart, Gaon Streaming Chart, and Gaon BGM Chart, respectively, in the September 5-11, 2021.

The song debuted at positions 68 and 16 on the Billboard K-pop Hot 100 and World Digital Songs charts, respectively, on September 18, 2021. The song then rose to number 17 on the K-pop Hot 100 chart in the October 23, 2021 issue.

The song debuted at number 25 on Singapore's RIAS Top Streaming Chart in the issue dated September 10-16, 2021. The song also debuted at number 20 on the RIAS Top Regional Chart during September 3-9, 2021. The song then rose to positions 22 and 7 on the RIAS Top Streaming Chart and RIAS Top Regional Chart, respectively, in the chart issue dated September 17-23, 2021.

Promotions

Prior to the release of the extended play, on September 6, 2021, STAYC hosted a live event called "STAYC The 1st Mini Album [STEREOTYPE] Showcase" on V Live to present their EP and its songs, including "Stereotype". Following the release of the extended play, the group played "Stereotype" on four music shows: KBS2's Music Bank on September 10, MBC's Show! Music Core on September 11, SBS's Inkigayo on September 12, and SBS MTV's The Show on September 14, where they took first place. On September 11, the group performed the song on You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook. On the second week of the song's release, the group performed on MBC M's Show Champion on September 15 and Mnet's M Countdown on September 16, winning first place.
